ACES MIDDLE SCHOOL TENNIS

 Purpose

To provide a fun, instructional, and affordable tennis program open to all Granville Middle School students during Spring and Fall that provides a stepping stone to learn a game in which they can participate in for the rest of their lives, and an entry, if they wish, to the GHS Varsity tennis team.

Conditions for Admission

Students (boys and girls) of any level (beginner welcome)

Must be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade

Residents of Granville or others as defined by Granville Recreation Commission (GRC)  

Instruction - Lesson Plan

Objective

Develop personal and athletic skills in addition to having fun. Help players make the best use of their time. Instruction: Position, technique, game experience, sportsmanship and team commitment.

 

Instruction Level Focus

Beginner (Level 1.0 – 2.0)

Assist and instruction with basic positions for singles and doubles play. Grip preparation; forehand and backhand; rally at slow pace; full swing serving; getting ball in play – Two practices per week, no matches.

Intention is not to have more than 5 beginners per coach.

Intermediate (Level 3.0)

Instruction with hitting backhand and forehand shots with fair consistency on moderate shots. Serve instruction with control and power; service returns; net play; lob tactics. Develop approach and overhead shots. Doubles teamwork – Two practices per week, and matches (home or away)

Advanced (Level 4.0)

Hitting ground strokes with depth. Direct the ball with consistency. Developing the spin. Place both first and second serve with power. Return serve with power. Instruction of tactics. Recognition of opponents’ weakness and directional control at the net – Two practices per week, and matches (home or away)

Equipment

Non marking court tennis shoes

Sport clothes (no special requirements)

Tennis racquet

Note: For beginners, if your child does not have access to a tennis racquet, please contact one of the coaches. They may be able to provide one for their first season.

 

In case of rain call the GRC at 587-1976 for update on cancellations

Practices may shift between GHS and Denison courts. In case of change of location, you will be contacted by the Team Parent Coordinator using the contact information provided on the GRC Registration Form

In case all courts are unavailable (wet or all used), the team will do off court strengthening training

- Saturday April 4th – Time: 6:00 – 8:00 pm – Location: Advantage Club

- Friday April 24th – Time: 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Location: Ginise House

- Friday May 22th – Time: 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Location: Moreau House

Fee Fall ’09 Season: $35 (non resident add $10 see GRC rule)

The entire program is directed, managed, and coached by volunteers. Fees cover the following expenses:

Notes:

Funds are managed by GRC

Any money left at the end of the season will be used as seed money for the next season, unless decided otherwise by consensus for the benefit of the whole team.

15 year experience tennis instructor. GHS Girls tennis coach for 4 years. Grew up in Granville, played tennis at GTC, Granville High School and Bowling Green State University.
