The Granville Youth Wrestling team wrapped up an impressive season this past Sunday by winning the League Championships at Utica. The team, comprised of Granville youth, grades K-6, competes in the Licking County Youth Wrestling League. Granville beat Licking Valley 53-36 in the semi finals while Watkins beat Utica in the other semi final. Granville then faced off against Watkins for the league title. These same 2 teams faced off last year for the title, with Watkins winning. On Sunday it looked to be a repeat of last year when at the half way point of the match Watkins was up by 18 points. But it all began to change with Mitch Kunar’s 1-0 victory. Kunar’s win was followed by 9 straight wins, including 5 pins. Final score, Granville 56 – Watkins 23.
Just 3 years ago this team did not win a single match, last year they took second place, then this year they reached the top. Great job by all those kids who made this possible. The team is coached by Steve Mendicino, a former team captain of the Ohio State University wrestling team.
