The Granville youth wrestling team recently completed their second championship season in 2 years. The wrestlers compete in the Licking County Youth Wrestling league. After going 5-0 in the regular season they competed in the county championship duals on Sunday Feb 17th. In the 8 team bracket the Aces first defeated Heath, then Licking Heights before squaring off for the championship against Watkins. Watkins has been in the championship finals now 5 years in a row. After losing a close match with Granville last year, Watkins was hoping to unseat the reigning champs. In the opening match at 45 lbs Jackson Terry started the Aces off with a pin to go up 6-0. Watkins however proceeded to reel off wins in the next 9 weight classes to take what appeared to be an insurmountable lead, 37-6. At 95lbs Zach Walsh started the rally for the Blues Aces by winning his match in overtime. At 101 lbs Keegan VanMeter pinned to push the score to 37-15. Zander Finley delivered a crucial pin at 113lbs to close the scoring gap even further. Brandon Haley pinned at 138 lbs to put the Blue aces up 39-37. Collin Freeman then won by tech fall at heavy weight to close the match and give Granville their 2nd title in as many years.  The Blue Aces are now 19-2 in dual competition over the last 3 years. The youth team is comprised of boys K-6, and is part of the Granville Recreation District. This year’s team was led by head coach Steve Mendicino, along with assistants Brett Black, Jake Warner, Doug Steffeny, and Mark Kunar
