Travel Basketball 4th, 5th & 6th Grades

As part of an initiative to enhance and streamline youth sports programs in our community, the Granville Recreation District is including youth basketball “travel teams” in its upcoming basketball season program.   One travel team will be selected for both boys and girls in grades 4, 5 and 6.  Participation in the “travel team” will be selected in a try-out process for both boys and girls teams. Travel basketball tryouts will be held October 3rd thru October 8th at both the middle and intermediate schools.  Tryouts will be open to boys and girls who reside in the Granville School district in grades 4th – 6th.

Rec Basketball Grades K thru 8

As part of a continuing initiative to encourage player development in youth sports
programs in our community, the Granville Recreation District will continue facilitating
youth “recreation”  basketball teams in its upcoming  season.  Teams will be selected for both boys and girls in grades K thru 8. Grades K & 1 will be Co-ed , all other grades will be gender specific.  All participants that register by the registration deadline will be placed on a team. Clinic/evaluations will be held in order to create equality amongst the teams at each grade level.  Rec teams will be open to boys and girls who reside in the Granville School district in grades K – 8. Registration will begin in early October.

The league will be divided into 4 divisions.

  1. Fundamentals Division[Coed] – Kindergarten and 1st
  2. Prep Division – 2nd
  3. Minors  – 3th and 4th
  4. Majors – 5th and 6th

FUNDAMENTAL DIVISION
Goals:

  1. Listening to Coaches
  2. Hustle
  3. Understand basketball terminology
  4. Dribble technique
  5. Passing technique
  6. Defense technique
  7. Catching technique
  8. Out of bounds play
  9. Learn and run a play
  10. Lay Ups
  11. Shooting Form

Format:

  1. 6-8 kids per team.
  2. Practice 1 hour per week
  3. 1 hour games per week with coach’s as game managers
  4. 3 vs 3
  5. Location GES gym

PREP DIVISON – 2nd graders, gender specific teams
Goals:

  1. Build on everything from Fundamentals Division
  2. Understand basketball rules
  3. Spacing
  4. Learn at least two plays
  5. Learn at least one inbound plays

Format:

  1. 8-10 kids
  2. Practice 1 hour per week
  3. 1 hour games per week with one coach acting as referee.
  4. 5 vs 5
  5. Location GES gym

MINOR DIVISON – 3rd and 4th graders, gender specific teams
Goals:

  1. Build on prior two divisions.
  2. Spacing!!!
  3. Boxing Out/Rebounding
  4. Understand positions and development of positions on floor

Format:

  1. Multiple community league with focus on playing teams within Granville
  2. 5 vs 5
  3. 1 certified ref and 1 high school student
  4. Primary location GIS, secondary GMS

MAJOR DIVISON – 5th and 6th graders, Gender specific teams
Goals:

  1. Build on prior 3 divisions
  2. Begin acquiring skills about individual positions.

Format:

  1. Multiple community league with focus on playing teams within Granville
  2. 5 vs 5
  3. 1 certified ref and 1 high school student
  4. Primary location GIS, secondary GMS

SENIOR DIVSION – 7th and 8th graders.

This division will be based on the practice format and plays done by the Granville Middle School Program.  The availability of this league will be based on number of students that enroll.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT REC BASKETBALL:
Question: Number of weeknight practices, what day that might be, and general time frame?
Answer: Goal is to have at least 1 maybe two, one hour,  practice slots a week.  Typically times will be between 6:00 and 8:00 PM.

Question: Number of games and what day they will be?
Answer: 1 game a week and they will be on Saturdays across all divisions.

Question: Ball size?
Answer: 3rd – 6th Grades, balls size is 28.5.   K – 2nd Grades, is a Junior size ball.

Question: Height of rim?
Answer: K – 2nd Grades, 8 ft and 3rd – 6th Grades, 10 ft.

Question: Length of season (begin and end dates or weekend)?
Answer: 3rd – 6th Grades will start mid-November for practices.  Games will be in December, January, and February.

Question: Post season tournaments?
Answer: Yes there will be a post season tournament.

Question: What do they get with registration fee…jersey and short?
Answer: 3rd – 6th Grades get shorts and jersey.  K – 2nd Grades get T-shirts.
